How to Measure Your Dog for a Crate

Getting the right crate size isn't complicated, but accuracy matters. A crate that's too small is uncomfortable and stressful. A crate that's too large defeats the purpose of crate training for housebreaking. Here's how to measure correctly:

Step 1: Measure Your Dog's Length

With your dog standing naturally, measure from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail (where the tail meets the body, not the tip of the tail). Add 2-4 inches for comfort.

Step 2: Measure Your Dog's Height

Measure from the floor to the top of their head (or ear tips if they stand erect). Your dog should be able to stand naturally without ducking. Add 2-4 inches for clearance.

The Golden Rule

Dog's Length + 2-4" = Minimum Crate Length
Dog's Height + 2-4" = Minimum Crate Height

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my dog is between two crate sizes?
Generally, go with the larger size. Your dog needs to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. If you're worried about housetraining, use a divider to make the space smaller until your dog is fully trained, then remove it.
How do I size a crate for my puppy?
Buy for your puppy's expected adult size, then use a crate divider to adjust the space as they grow. This is more economical than buying multiple crates. Research your breed's typical adult size or ask your vet for an estimate.
Can a crate be too big?
For housetraining purposes, yes. Dogs naturally avoid soiling where they sleep. If the crate is too large, they may use one end as a bathroom. For adult dogs already housetrained, a larger crate is fineโ€”they'll appreciate the extra room.
What size crate for airline travel?
Airlines have specific requirements. Generally, your dog must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally. The crate must be IATA-approved (hard plastic with ventilation on at least 3 sides). Check with your specific airline for their exact requirements before purchasing, as they can vary.
Should I get a wire or plastic crate?
It depends on your needs. Wire crates are best for home useโ€”they're ventilated, foldable, and usually include dividers. Plastic crates are required for airline travel and create a cozy, den-like feel some dogs prefer. Many owners have both: wire for home, plastic for travel.
How long can I leave my dog in a crate?
Puppies: Age in months + 1 = max hours (e.g., 3-month puppy = 4 hours max)
Adult dogs: Generally 4-6 hours maximum during the day. Dogs can hold it longer overnight (8-10 hours) when sleeping.
Never use a crate as punishment, and ensure your dog gets plenty of exercise and attention outside the crate.
